Welcome, Kia Ora to Marist Catholic School, Herne Bay – We are a State-Integrated Catholic Primary School with a maximum roll of 300 students. We take students from Year 0 to 6. In Year 7, our students go on to a variety of schools. Mainly to St Mary’s College, St Paul’s College and St Peters College. We aim to provide our students with a wide range of learning opportunities in core curriculum areas and various extracurricular activities. As our school has grown and progressed over the last 95 years, we are proud of the continued high expectations of behaviour, the embodiment of our school values, the strong academic achievement, and past and present achievements.
Vision & Values
As a Catholic school our Special Character is at the heart of all we do. Gospel values underpin our daily lives.
We value our Christian faith. We deliver a morals based education; our children should clearly understand the difference between right and wrong.
We respect each child’s uniquenes and the special attributes they bring to the school.
With these words to guide us we strive to be, first and foremost, a person who says ‘Yes” as Mary did.
We strive to live a life true to the Gospel values as Mary did. We encourage each other, support each other, respect each other and most importantly, look to Mary our Mother, in times of adversity.
You can learn about ways to help your child with their faith understanding by accessing the Family Whanau book here.
Our students identified what each of these values looked like, felt like and sounded like to bring life to each value as you see here in these visuals. Each of these values has its foundation in scripture:
Respect: Do to others as you would have them do to you Luke 6:31
Integrity: He who walks in integrity walks securely Proverbs 10:9
Courage: Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go Joshua 1:9
Humility: Do nothing from selfishness or conceit, but in humility count others better than yourselves 2 Phillippians 2:3.
Marist also weaves the Maori Values of Whanaungatanga (belonging for all), Arohatanga (empathy, tolerance, understanding of difference, forgiveness compassion) and Manaakitanga (hospitality and warmth, sharing and helping, celebrating our uniqueness, bringing out the best in each other so all can reach their potential) into all interactions.
A Welcome message from the Principal
A very warm welcome to Marist Catholic School Herne Bay.
A very warm welcome to Marist Catholic School Herne Bay. We are a Catholic School close to the central city, serving the Catholic Communities of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Herne Bay and Sacred Heart in Vermont St, Ponsonby.
As a Marist School we follow the Marist Charism; where we think, feel, act and judge in the way of Mary. We work at being others’ centred, showing our RICH values and Maori Values in all our interactions. Our RICH values are Respect, Integrity, Courage and Humility and our Maori Values are Whanaungatanga, Manaakitanga and Arohatanga.
You will find our school to have a warm, friendly atmosphere. Our staff are hard-working and committed to the growth of all of our students – academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually.
The Board of Trustees are dedicated to supporting all areas of the schools governance. As Principal of Marist Catholic School Herne Bay, you will find me to be open, keen to listen and engage with you and your whanau.
